OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE (SROSCB001A)
This course requires lessons in the class room and confined water (usually a swimming pool) before applying the skills learnt in the open water environment. Under the guidance of a professional SSI Instructor, you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to use and maintain scuba dive equipment.

ADVANCED ADVENTURER (SROSCB002A)
This is a continuing education course for certified divers. It is an enjoyable program of continued supervised experience designed to introduce divers to a wide variety of diving activities and to be taught entry in an open water setting. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are considered competent to engage in open water diving activities without supervision, providing the diving activities and the areas dived approximate those of training.

The course requires six separate dives. The Advanced Specialty Course is designed to allow the student to experience at least 6 different specialty dives including 1 night, 1 deep (24 – 40 metres), 1 navigation. Three additional dives appropriate for the area and conditions can be selected such as search & recovery, boat diving, wreck diving, waves, tides & currents, U/W photography and others. Inquire with your trainer for the most suitable to you and your location.

NIGHT DIVING/LIMITED VISIBILITY (SROSCB003A)
Night diving is a natural extension of a diver’s activities. With limited visibility diving, your range of activities is unsurpassed, opening up new dive sites to explore in your own locale. You will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and to perform a night dive.

Night Diving/Limited Visibility specialty course uses a complete training system, the manual; including chapter review questions and a short video to present everything you need to know about diving after dark, or when the visibility is limited. This unit covers the knowledge and skills to prepare for and perform a dive at night demonstrating night navigation and hazard avoidance, Lighting options, their use and reliability and nocturnal aquatic life and requires 2 night/limited visibility dives.

DEEP DIVING SPECIALTY COURSE (SROSCB004A)
This unit covers the knowledge and skills to prepare for and perform a deep dive to between 18 and 40 metres, taking into account hazards and emergency procedures. You will learn the elements of Deep Dive Planning, the Increased Hazards of Deep Diving, Repetitive Deep Diving and the Specific Equipment Requirements and Configuration needed to safely and successfully enjoy Deep Diving.

The course consists of 4 open water dives, each must be in excess of 18 metres and 2 dives must be deeper than 30 metres but not more than 40 metres.

NAVIGATION (SROSCB006A)
This unit covers the knowledge and skills to make distance and time calculations and navigate underwater along prescribed routes. Whether using a compass or your natural surroundings, you as a scuba diver, can learn to master your marine environments through the skills of navigation. The ability to navigate into fascinating new destinations enhances your diving adventure and increases your level of confidence.

On this course you will learn navigation skills, appropriate types of navigation, accident management knowledge. You will use a compass to set a course and learn distance calculation skills such as counting time, counting kick cycles, arm spans, air use and using lines and reels.

SSI STRESS AND RESCUE DIVER (SROSCB007A)
Stress is a major contributor to rescue situations and diving accidents. You can improve your diving confidence and enjoyment by learning to recognise situations that lead to problems and to handle problem situations with special techniques. This unit covers the knowledge of diving physiology and the ability to apply skills to perform diving rescues. Additional competencies, such as the administration of supplemental oxygen, are detailed in other units of competency.

With this course you will learn the basics of:

  • The causes and prevention of stress
  • Detecting and dealing with diving- related stress in yourself and your buddy
  • Accident management procedures
  • Rescue skills that assist the victim, while protecting yourself
  • Simple, yet effective search patterns
  • Dealing with situations that complicate rescues
  • Self aid and buddy aid in numerous situations
  • Problem solving in emergency situations

You will also learn about how your equipment can help you to stay relaxed and enjoy every dive, what equipment is required in various rescue situations, and how to use your equipment properly in the event of a rescue and care of oxygen equipment.

INSPECT & FILL SCUBA CYLINDERS (SROSCB008A)
This unit covers the knowledge and skills to conduct visual inspections of scuba cylinders and fill scuba diving cylinders. In this course you will learn how to inspect the exterior of a scuba cylinder, inspect the interior of a scuba cylinder, use a high pressure compressor to fill scuba cylinders, fill a high pressure cylinder designed for use in scuba diving. There are no entry requirements for this course. Experience in the Scuba industry is an asset.

COMPUTER DIVING (SROSCB020A)
This course will give you the required skills to dive aided by a computer. The modern diver does multi-level diving which means that the dive incorporates different depth levels. These kind of dives can only be planned with a special type of table or a dive computer. Dive computers make diving safer and easier if you know how to set and use it correctly. The skills you will gain are as follows:

  • The equipment and preparation for multi-level-dives
  • Medical aspects of multi-level-dives
  • Dive Computers in comparison to dive tables
  • Emergency management and procedures in multi-level-diving

WRECK DIVING (SROSCB021A)
With this course you will learn where and how to get background information on wrecks, how to locate wrecks and how to prepare for a wreck dive.

During the 2 mandatory dives you will apply the correct wreck diving techniques, as well as, evaluate and avoid the potential risks while diving on wrecks.

BOAT DIVING (SROSCB022A)
This course teaches the required skills to dive from live aboard, day and private boats. You will learn boat terminology, the rules and regulations of diving off boats, boat diving techniques, how to choose the right travel agency and diving operator when planning your vacation, what to consider when travelling with your Total Diving System. Taking a boat diving program prior to your vacation guarantees you will be ready.

SNORKEL UNITS

PARTICIPATE IN SNORKELING (SROSNK001A)
During the SNORKEL DIVER Program a well trained SSI Instructor will teach you the proper knowledge and skills required for your experience in the underwater world. This unit covers the knowledge and skills to enable participation in snorkelling activities in confined and / or open water and the use and maintenance of snorkel dive equipment. Also included in the course are best practice guidelines for minimizing environmental impact and planning for outdoor recreation activities.

GUIDE SNORKELING (SROKSNK002A)
This course covers the knowledge and skills required to guide clients in a snorkel diving activity. This includes planning outdoor recreation activities for other people, undertaking risk analysis of these activities, and coordinating emergency response and rescue as required.

Key clients for this qualification are experienced divers who wish to pursue a career in the diving industry. SSI Snorkel Guide offers opportunities for employment guiding recreational snorkel dives in some of the great dive sites of the world. Possible career paths are in Dive Tourism, Marine Studies, Outdoor Pursuits, Environmental Education, or Adventure Tourism.

INSTRUCT SNORKELING (SROSNK003A)
This unit covers the knowledge and skills to instruct learners to achieve competencies in order to participate independently, or with minimal supervision, in a snorkelling activity.

SSI Instructors teach with proven methods using innovative training techniques so that students will enjoy the learning experience. Learning skills becomes easy and fun. From these approach also results the Slogan of SSI – serious diving. serious fun.

Since the start of 2007, snorkelling as a training program has been separated from diving. This change allows non-divers to become Snorkel Instructors. Due to this interested Aqua Fun Parks, Fitness Centers, Public Pools in the domestic markets and Snorkel Service Providers in resort areas can become professional SSI Snorkelling Clubs by fulfilling the standards and by having a Snorkel Instructor on staff.
